AD 500-600
Japan

This pommel would have been fitted on a straight iron sword with a single cutting-edge. It is an example of the ring-shaped (annular) type of pommel. The designs, including dragons and phoenixes, were often taken from items imported from the Asian continent. A pin through the hole in the base-plate would have fixed the pommel into the hilt.
